Kundapura: Vidya Gowda, a student of Bearys College of Education at Kodi, has been recruited by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). She is the only candidate from her college and the entire Udupi district to achieve this feat. The youngest child of the couple Hunasemakki Ramesh Gowda and Parvati, residents of Yelajita village in Byndoor district, Vidya has been active in sports and learning since childhood. She completed her primary education at the Aerospace school, and completed her high school education at Sri Mookambika High School, Kollur, her Pre University education at Kundapura Junior College, and attained her B.Sc degree at Bhandarkar’s College, Kundapura. She finally got her B.Ed degree at the prestigious Bearys College of Education, Kodi. The army recruited Vidya when she was nearing the end of her B.Ed.

A Sports Champ: Vidya excelled in sports in her high school and college days. She was also recognized as a champion in various sports disciplines. At Netball, she represented Karnataka State 5 times and played at the national level once. She has represented Karnataka State 6 times in athletics and has also won a bronze medal in the pole vault. She has won many first and second places representing Mangalore University at the District and Taluk levels. Vidya has also been awarded the CHAITRA CHINTU State Award by the Department of Sports for her achievements.

Her family and the people of her village are happy, Vidya is now joining the army.
“I am proud of my daughter joining the Indian Army. I wanted her to become an educated person and do good work. I did not think she would serve her country through the Army. I am not educated, but my wish is for all children to get an education and find themselves a good job,” says Ramesh Gowda, Vidya’s dad.

“I am proud to serve my country, and this is a great opportunity for me. It was fun when the recruitment letter reached me. I am proud of this, as well as my hometown. I am leaving for training at Gwalior”, says an elated Vidya!
